Balance Point

For nearly three decades, guitarists Robert Musso and Mark Daterman have been performing and recording guitar duets in a variety of settings. Balance Point offers a new perspective on this collaboration. Although several outings in the past featured vintage gear, Balance Point highlights a new twist on the theme: vintage Fender Stratocasters played through vintage Fender amps (see descriptions below), without any pedal effects. The result is an original and distinctive departure from the standard jazz-inflected improvised guitar duet. Imagine the rich harmony and spontaneous exploratory melodies of the contemporary lexicon, refracted through the prism of vintage gear the likes of which was famously used by Buddy Holly, Carl Wilson, and others of their working musician cohort, and you”ll get some idea of the hot glassine purity of sound that informs the explorations of these sessions.

Recorded in early 2023 in lower Manhattan, Balance Point is a fresh look at the time-honored tradition of the guitar duet, utilizing vintage sonic materials to inspire something new.

The instruments:

Robert Musso (left channel): 1963 Fender Stratocaster with rosewood fingerboard, playa through a brown Fender Concert amplifier and a Fender tube reverb unit.

Mark Daterman (right channel): 1957 Fender Stratocaster with maple fingerboard, played through a 1959 Fender Pro tweed amplifier.
